a family business, home, and community spot

Asagi Hatchery is my family’s home and business. It began as a backyard micro farm by my grandfather in 1931. Its current iteration was built in 1960, in the heart of the now industrial neighborhood of Kalihi on the island of Oahu.

I relocated to Honolulu, part-time in 2001 and them full-time in 2008, to be part of my family’s efforts to steward the hatchery into the 21st century. After years of inner conflict about the direction of my creative practice, I’m now able to see that my work with the hatchery is perhaps my longest project.

What also is becoming evident is that the main work of the hatchery has evolved to be more than about chicks or eggs. Every day, every gesture, grows ways of being in community.
